Cuts in feed in tariffs for solar panel sites

The government has announced proposed cuts of over 50% in the feed in tariffs (FIT) subsidy for domestic solar panel schemes.

The proposed cuts are subject to a consultation until 23 December 2011. The new FIT’s are proposed to apply to all installations with an eligibility date on or after 12 December 2011, which will receive the current FIT’s until 1 April 2012 and then the new FIT going forward. Installations with an eligibility date before 12 December 2011 will not be affected by the changes.

There are also proposals for energy efficiency measures to be in place in homes which seek solar panel FIT’s from April 2012, in a move that is thought to be underpinning the governments proposed “Green Deal.”

The measures will have a profound effect on the solar industry, particularly “free” solar schemes where panels are installed in return for the provider receiving the FIT.
