Jo Shuter, head teacher of Quintin Kynaston School in St John’s Wood, London has been suspended from her post, because of a pending police investigation of financial irregularity at the school.
Awarded head of the year at the Teaching Awards in 2007 and described by Ofsted as outstanding and an “inspirational” head teacher, Mrs Shuter turned around failing Quintin Kynaston School, which has since become an academy.
The outcome of the investigation is still awaited. Questions will no doubt be raised over the financial scrutiny of academies but the reality is that financial irregularities have been found throughout the years in maintained schools. It is of course important that governors ensure that the financial audit systems in place for academies are rigorous to enable any financial irregularities to be brought to light. This case demonstrates that although academies are independent from the local authority, they are still held accountable and responsible for their actions.
